MediaCoder Mobile Phone HOWTO
From MediaCoderWiki
This HOWTO guides mobile phone users to use MediaCoder to transcode DVD/VCD and other media files for playback on the mobile phones, which support mp4 format. Although many old types of mobile phones support only 3GP rather than MP4, MP4 is still a very popular format for mobile players. Moreover, with the correct settings on the video encoder and container, the 3GP files can also be generated.

Select the file(s) to be transcoded
To select the source file, click Add file or Add Dir from the tool bar.
MediaCoder Toolbar
Alternatively, you could simply drag and drop your source files into MediaCoder.
Revert All Settings (Optional)
If you have made changes to the settings, it's recommended to revert all settings to default.
If you skip this step, all current settings will be kept. If one or more is not compatible with your phone, the transcoding may not succeed even if you follow this HOWTO. If you are very familiar with the settings of MediaCoder, you can skip this step.
Basic Settings
With the assistant of the device plugins (Mobile Phone), the settings will be easier. Your mobile phone's model is listed in the plugin dialog, then you are lucky. Simply choose it and click Start and your files will be transcoded. Even if you are not using the model of mobile phone listed, the plugin will arrange many common settings for you and with some further settings you will be able to do the job.
Click the Play button to play the view in the Mobile Phone on the screen (click it again stops playing).
The Preview button doesn't work before the last stage of video transcoding process begins. As you may have noticed, the aspect ratio is not properly handled so that the picture looks a little bit wider than it should be. In this case, you need to do cropping on the original video by click Crop button.
Audio and Video Settings
The following are some detailed audio and video settings. Some of them may already be set by the mobile phone plug-in.
Audio
Nero Encoder is recommended as the audio encoder, and LC-AAC is recommended as the audio format because compared with the amr format, LC-AAC has better effect and creates smaller files.
In the Nero Encoder settings, you can select the Target Quality of your audio. Choose this to suit your playback device. For example, you probably don't need very good quality for a mobile phone's speakers, but you may want high quality for an MP4 Player.
Video
Select the XviD as Codec and MP4 as Format;
The Bitrate of the video should be set considering the Frame Size and Frame Rate and according to the Media Player's capability such as Motorola E1, Nokia N70, Samsung E900, ARCHOS AV500 and etc. Since the CPU of your Media Player varies, these settings will greatly impact the final effect.
Select MP4Box as Multiplexer.
Other Settings
Picture
The resizing/scaling, in most cases, needs to be applied to match the screen resolution of your mobile phone. For example, the resolution of E1 is 176x144, while N70 is 208x176. The 4:3 aspect ratio is for E900 as well as other types. E900 is able to scale up and down picture of various resolutions to fit its screen size. For the old types, they might only be able to play the files with no bigger size than their max resolution.
